Many of our grandparents used this phrase to survive in life:
Use It Up
Wear It Out
Make It Do
Do Without

Today, I propose that this phrase still works today. It is much better than "Just Do It" or "Have it Your Way", financially, at least. Having peace in my life = peace in all areas, including our finances. So I will "do without" happily.

In case you think that I am just typing these words instead of living them, here are 5 things that I am currently doing without:

1. My Rainbow vacuum cleaner - the tub broke in an unfortunate accident and rather than buy a new one, we are borrowing my in-law's back-up vac for the time being.
2. A second car - the muffler needs repaired, but we are CHOOSING (note emphasis here) on waiting for the repair and just driving the other "good" car - and yes, we have been CHOOSING this since October.
3. I have not had a hair cut in over 5 months. I am now a permanent fan of the ponytail and clip.
4. My store bought laundry soap - yes, I made homemade and love it just the same.
5. Our zoo membership - I know that this is whiney, but we have seriously always had this. We don't need it, especially in this bitter cold winter. Does this mean that my kids are missing some homeschool opportunities? Yes, but we are finding new, free ones instead.

There are many, many other things that we are choosing to forego in this season of life. Is it killing us? Nope. It actually is making us more creative with our time and our money. In fact, we just spent the eve making memories by playing a card game called Princess Purple with our kids. (The oldest really needs to work on his poker face, by the way.) A nice night with memories and laughs. It is the simple things, folks.

Can you choose to "do without" something to make your financial future brighter? We all make choices; will yours reflect a (financial) life of peace or chaos?

Homemade Laundry Soap

Here was the recipe I used today to make no-cook laundry soap. Thanks to my friend, Natalie, for her recipe!

2 bars Fels Napatha grated in food processor
1/2 Lg box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
1/2 Lg box of Borax

Mix all together in a recycled big ice cream bucket with lid. Shake it up to mix even better.

Add 1 T to washing machine to wash clothes. Use fabric softner as normal.

(All ingredients were found in the laundry aisle of my local Kroger.)

My Word For the Year

I have decided to pick a word to focus on for this new year instead of a bunch of lofty resolutions that I will likely not keep. This word is PEACE.

I want PEACE in all areas of my life: in my spiritual quietness, in my home clutter, in my finances, in my children, in my community, in my friendships, in my marriage, in me, period. This means that with all decsions this year I will think, "Will it provide me/my family PEACE?" If the answer is no, it has to go! If the answer is maybe, I will stop and wait awhile. If the answer is yes, you can't stop me from racing towards it!

With so much uncertainity in our lives, collecting unemployment, on a multi-state job hunt, and the like, the thing I crave the most is PEACE. Worry is not an invited guest in this home. He has been kicked to the curb.

I have watched God provide time and time again over the last 3 months. We have been blessed with lots of laughter, times of teaching, reconnecting with each other, friends who pray with us, food in abundance, and tears of joy. The bills are all paid in full. No one is hungry. God is good.

So this year, as I reflect on PEACE in all (even miniscule) areas of my life, I challenge you: What word or phrase can you reflect on in 2012? Could it be SIMPLIFY? TRUST? PRAISE? CONTENT? GROWTH? Your word is and will be as unique as you are - a precious child who our Maker delights in. He sings over you now.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." Isaiah 26:3

Using My Stockpile and Savoring Our Time

Just a quick update: My hubby (for various reasons) is on what we are calling his "mini-retirement". I have been so very grateful for our stockpile of food and health & beauty during this time as we are NOT on any form of government assistance. I love that our bills are paid, our tummies are full, and we are having some extra-special Daddy time during this season of our lives. It is likely that this mini-retirement will not last very long, so we are appreciating it and each other while it lasts.

God is good, all the time.

And, my stockpile ROCKS! :)

We Have Liftoff!

School has started. We just finished our first week. Now, for a weekend. But, that will involve soccer, church, and all the stuff I can't seem to get done around the house while school is in session. This Mama is pooped. Right now I think I'll start summer by napping and snuggling with my star students. :)

Filing my coupons will have to wait until tomorrow.

Back To School

For many of us, it has officially arrived. I now have a first grader and a kindergartner. WOW! Time flies, doesn't it? Here are some tips that I wanted to share for back-to-school:

1. Shop the loss leaders on supplies. Check Staples and Office Max every single week. Or take those ads and price match at WalMart.

2. A new backpack is not necessary every year. If you buy a quality backpack (such as Jansport) you will use it for years. I've had mine since 1996 and its still going strong!

3. Do the combo sales at Meijer. Buy groceries that you need and get basic ata discounted rate. This week is tennis shoes and Hanes products. They just had a Fruit of the Loom promo as well.

4. Wait on the fall clothes. You don't need them now. They will go on sale later. The stores are counting on you to buy those jeans and hoodies now. If you wait until October, you will score them at a better price.

5. Set a budget. Give your child the cash for their supplies. Let them decide how to spend it. Do they really need the Jonas brothers folder or would they rather have a cool lunchbox?

Garden Bounty Recipe

Our garden has really done well with green beans this year. Here is one of our favorite bean recipes that uses the crock pot. No oven or stove! :)

1-2# Smoked Skinless Turkey Sausage
2-4 white potatoes
1-2# fresh green beans
1 can chicken broth

Snap and clean beans. Mix with peeled, diced potatoes in the bottom of the crock pot. Slice sausage over the top. Pour on can of chicken broth. Cook HIGH for 4 hours for al dente beans, 6 hours for soft beans. Enjoy with sprinkle of cheddar cheese on the top.

Top Ten Reasons Our Garage Sale Was Successful

We just finished a weekend garage sale here and we met our goal! I thought I'd take a few minutes to share with you the reasons that I believe our sale was successful.

10. It was organized. I organized each table by category. We had a kitchen area, toy area, clothing area, etc.

9. My items were clean. I took out a tub of clorox wipes and periodically cleaned off dust and grime on items that were for sale.

8. We kept great business hours without getting overwhelmed. We were only open from 9-3 on Friday and 9-noon on Saturday. This was adequate time to sell and gave us plenty of time to rest and rejuvenate.

7. We had a great location. We live on a busy street. We get a LOT of drive-by traffic. If we didn't live here, I would have went somewhere else.

6. We had a FREE box. It was nice to be able to give away some items for free and it helped boost everyone's morale.

5. Multiple families participated. The more families, the more stuff, and the bigger the sale!

4. We had a set 1/2 price time. On Saturday at 10:00, everything that was left went to 1/2 price and boy - did it fly out of my garage!

3. We had great signs. We used bright marker colors, attached balloons, and wrote in large letters. The other great thing was using old candidate signage to staple our signs on, so that they could go in the ground easily.

2. We had refreshments that went to a good cause. Who can resist lemonade from a kid who donates to the food pantry? This stand helped people linger longer and we met some real nice folks :)

1. We always had adequate help. There was a minimum of 2 adults present at all times. We could tag team customers and even help carry items to cars. No one felt ignored.

All in all, this was one of our most successful sales to date. Hope these tips help you when you plan your next garage sale.

We are currently saving money like crazy for a few big projects. Because of this, my shopping has been at a minimal lately. I have; however, been forced to purchase school supplies and a few clothing items for the kiddos. I have done well with this with a) staples deals/rebates and b) target clearance clothing.

My goal for August and September is to buy minimal grocery items and use what we have so that we can keep on paying cash for these home projects that we have going on. We do have a foreign exchange student coming for 2 weeks in August, so I will have a little extra in the grocery budget there, but overall we are on a clean out spree!

A few reminders for you:

We have been putting a lot of time and money into our cars lately. Tires, O2 sensors, muffler, spark plug wires, etc. These things definately needed done...I'll give you that. But, our car was still stalling.

Our dear friend and mechanic told us that we needed a new ignition switch. I decided to google this so we could order the part and - lo and behold- our car was recalled for the ignition switch years ago. Somehow we never got a recall notice. (Lost in the move? Sent to lender instead of us? Sent to former owner?)

Moral of this story: The ignition switch was faulty. Is considered deadly. And will be fixed at the dealers for FREE.

Product Review - Scrubbing Bubbles

OK, here's the deal - I have been battling soap scum stains on my glass shower doors for 8 years now. I have tried everything that I could find on the internet to combat this problem. I have used baking soda and vinegar, a steam sprayer, and multiple cleaners. I had given up and decided that my bathroom just plain stunk.

I bought some regular Scrubbing Bubbles the other day because it was on sale. I remembered my childhood friend using it to do her chores as a kid and thinking how cool it was with the foaming and all. I gave my shower a spray down and didn't even have to scrub! The scum literally fell off. My shower doors are clear again. I couldn't believe it! I will never use anything else! My Soft Scrub days are done! (Don't tell my mother-in-law though because she swears by the stuff.)

In case you didn't get my point: I LOVE SCRUBBING BUBBLES!

In honor of summer days...here is a list of my Top Ten things to do for cheap family fun!

10. Get a Redbox movie, pop some corn, and have a family movie night. Two free codes are: DVDONME and BREAKROOM. Sign up for their monthly emails where you get a free code. We just watched Gnomeo and Juliet this way! Otherwise, you pay just $1 for a fun-family night.

9. Eat out at a restaurant where kids eat free on weekends. A good family place is Steak N Shake (and the kids get cute packets to color and free crackers while you wait for your meal.) Panda Express also has a free kids night.

8. Visit a local Farmer's Market to browse and shop for fresh produce/baked goods. The larger markets can be both a feast for your tummy and your eyes. :)

7. Visit a local museum. Where I live, we ask for a local children's science museum membership as a Christmas gift. It gives back to our local economy, fuels my children's growing minds, and gives us free entertainment throughout the year. With our membership, we can visit hundreds of other science centers through out the US for free.

6. Visit a local park or metropark to walk, bike, feed ducks, and play. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it! A great local place to visit is Rotary park.

5. See how far you can get on a tank of gas (or a half tank). We have made "free" trips to public beaches on Lake Erie for gas only. If you pack snacks in a cooler and sand toys, you can have a great adventure for little money. In Ohio, there are many places of beauty for free or minimal admission.

4. Have a family library day. Don't be rushed. Take time to play computer games, read a few books in the library snuggled in a chair, and pick some fresh music for your week. Leave with a free movie and you've got your evening planned also... While you are there, sign up for the summer reading program also.

3. Spend quality time with your friends. Organize a pot luck dinner. Play cards. Blow up the kiddie pool, set out a slip 'n' slide, and let your kids make friendships that will last as long as yours have.

2. Have a family campfire in your backyard's fire pit. Make smores and tell stories. Experiment with pie-iron pies and pizzas. If you feel really adventurous, sleep in your backyard and watch the stars.

1. Organize a game night for LOTS of friends. Invite families. Have everyone bring a snack to share and play group games like Scene-It, Charades, Catch Phrase, Cards, etc. We used to do this regularly and I truly miss it. Our Game Nights would really draw a diverse crowd : singles, students, seniors, toddlers, teens, baby-boomers, and babysitters! It was great fun, cheap, and a night of laughter with minimal cleanup.

Had to Share - Shelf Clearing

Lately, I have been discouraged in my couponing. When I hit the store, I can't always find the deals that I want due to empty shelves. I have a life and refuse to be waiting at the store when it opens for the deals on Monday.

I have been finding it harder and more of a hassle to get rain checks. In fact, I just let $3 in ECBs expire because I just couldn't muster up the courage to battle the cashiers at CVS. Sad, huh?

So, for now, I have been shopping at Aldi at lot. Am I saving? Absolutely. Am I saving as much? No. But, am I sane? Yes, yes, yes!

Then, today, I stumbled upon this article and was encouraged. This is just a phase. New couponers will burn out. I can take a deep breath, utilize my pantry stockpile, and wait this one out. You can too. Be encouraged. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And the deals will come back!

I was really excited about this because it not only contains my sale flyers, but coupons as of late. When we pulled back in about an hour later, it was gone. Someone thieved my coupons. Do they not know who I am? :)

Doing What I Can

My husband has officially started a new diet - or "lifestyle change." He needs a LOT of protein, veggies, and legumes. He is eating nothing white, dairy, or fruit. Needless to say, this has put an interesting spin on my $55/week grocery budget. It's just not realistic right now. As a supportive spouse who truly wants the best for my mate, I need to respect his diet choices and provide him with what he needs to feel healthy and energized.

These changes in my budget, meal plans, and shopping can leave an organized gal like me reeling! So, here are a few of the ways that I have maintained some control over our money and my time.

1. I have been shopping the sales. Ex: This week Kroger had chicken breast for $1.88 and pollock fish 10/$10. I stocked up on this inexpensive protein.

2. I have been buying vegetables by the case at Aldi's. Specifically: black beans, refried beans, mexican corn, and carrots. I just can't find anything cheaper anywhere else at this point.

3. I ordered coupons from a clipping service for products that I know he will eat: tuna, turkey sausage, protein bars, etc. I spent $5 (to get free shipping) and ordered over 70 specific coupons that I know we can use.

4. I have been taking advantage of Giant Eagle's fuel perks program. I figure if the grocery budget is going up, I am going to try to save where I can - on gas!

5. I also have been buying a lot of household staples at Walgreens and CVS. Normally I only bought health and beauty at these stores. This week at Wags, I got 4 boxes of Cream of Wheat (for the kids) for FREE after coupons. No tax even. I also used RR's (from the health and beauty specials) to lower my cost of toilet paper. I am getting what I want (health and beauty) and what I need (food and tp). Its a win - win if you ask me.

Hope these ideas help you if you are discouraged or trying to eat healthier on a budget. Remember that couponing is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Every dollar that you save, helps achieve your goals: paying down debt, saving for a big purchase, or planning a vacation. You don't need to compete with anyone. This is your wallet, your time, your family. Don't sweat the small stuff!

Kids are $15 regular price, but FREE for the next two days. Parking was $3. We had a fun-filled day and learned A LOT in the 3 hours we spent at the Aquarium! The jellyfish room was my favorite...

FYI: You can NOT take food into the aquarium. We packed lunch, headed to the car to eat, and then they let us back into the Aquarium with our stubs to finish up our visit.

Saving Money on Medical Expenses

We've had a lot of illness lately. I think every person in out home has been on at least 2 extra prescriptions this winter. Through all of this, I've learned a few ways to save a little money on our medical.

1. COUPON - Use coupons for the pharmacy. I've been blessed with a pediatrician who keeps the Target coupons for a $10 gift card with a new Rx at his check out desk. While I can not use the gift card to pay for my prescription, I can use it for tissues, OTC meds, juice, and soup.

2. FREE FLAVORS - Take advantage of FREE flavoring for kids meds. Again at Target, they are flavoring my kids meds for FREE. I had to pay $3 per Rx for this previously. Shop around for this service. You should not have to pay for it!

3. NEGOTIATE - Did you know that you can negotiate your medical expense? I have not personally tried this, but I have a friend who has been successful at it. The trick is you have to negotiate UP FRONT and pay your portion in cash. This is very helpful for large surgery bills, delivery bills, and dental bills.

4. PREVENTATIVE CARE - I was at the dentist this week and was gain reminded of the importance of flossing. With all of the free floss that couponers can get, there is really no excuse not to take care of your pearly whites. Preventative care also includes regular check ups, exercise, good nutrition, etc. Do it. It will save you moolah and add years to your life.

5. CHECK THE CHARTS - Always check the chart of the back of your bill from a hospital. Even though we have never qualified for a reduction of rates from our local hospital, we did qualify for a 50% drop from Children's hospital a few years ago. Especially if you have children, always check the chart on the back of the bill to see if your qualify for a rate reduction. Programs are available to help families.

Breakfasts for the month include: cereal, oatmeal, nutra grain bars, eggs, bagels, english muffins, toaster strudel, blueberry muffins, yogurt, bananas/oranges, and one doughnut day.

Lunches include: leftovers, lunchmeat/peanut butter sandwiches, ramen noodles, canned soups, grilled cheese, and possibly egg salad. We have plenty of apples, canned fruit, and snacks to get us through the month as well.

Advent Traditions: Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

As we prepare for the birth of the Savior of the world, I thought I would take a little time to share with you one of our favorite, frugal traditions.

Around the 25th of November, the kids and I haul out the leftover wrapping paper from last year's gifts. We then make 25 tags from craft supplies like card stock and stickers. Each tag is numbered from 1-25. We then lovingly wrap 25 books with paper, tag them, and place them in a basket by our tree. Every night before bed, the kids get to open a book and we read it as a family.

This is so special because it is a great time to wind down, cuddle up, and learn together. Some of our most precious discussions have come during this time. We have a great variety of books, but some of our favorites are:

-The Night Before Christmas (read on Dec 24th)
-Thomas Kincade's Away in a Manger
-Jesus, Me, and My Christmas Tree
-Merry Christmas, George (Curious George)
-The Crippled Lamb
-The Snowbelly Family of Chillyville Inn
-The Little Drummer Boy
-...and, on Christmas morning, before we open our stockings we read book #25: The Christmas Story

I hope this tradition inspires you to do something fun to make memories with your little loves this year. It's never too late to start something meaningful.

Oh, and isn't it wonderful that this Savior wants to have a real relationship with me? Not just on my good days, my nice days, my super-mom days, but my EVERY day! We are created to be in love with Him - He is the only one who can fill your heart with peace, your life with joy, your home with unconditional love.

Start Watching Target for TOY Clearance

It's time to start watching Target for toy clearance! Typically things will go in this order: 30% off, 50% off, 75% off. Toys do not go to 90% off unless they are considered seasonal (like stocking stuffers.)

As the stores clearance items, you can find toys in: the toy dept (duh!), all end caps, seasonal section at front of the store, back corners of housewares - by rubbermaid stuff, even in the electronics on end caps. Just make sure to look high and low!

Don't forget to look for seasonal books to be clearanced also. This is the time to start buying for next year...

Another tips: many of the seasonal stocking stuffer toys will work for Easter baskets or Valentine's Day gifts. Think outside of the box. If it is removed from the Christmas packaging, no one will be the wiser.

Its a rainy day here in Central OH. Therefore, at my house its a pj day, a school day, a catch up on my blog-reading day, a laundry day, an easy dinner day, a let's watch a movie in the afternoon kind of day. It may even turn into a family game night kind of day.

What do you like to do on rainy days?

I think that God knew we needed a day like this and ordered the rain just for us. I love my rainy, cozy days.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday

I have to admit that I have not been very motivated this year to get out and spend my hard-saved cash. Most of my shopping is complete as of today. I still have a few more small gifts to buy - under $10 each. I need to take the kids Daddy shopping. That's it.

I headed out to Meijer on Back Friday to purchase a DVD player for my husband's aunt. I went to WalMart and bought nada. Same with the mall. I went to CVS and bought ALL of the freebies. I also made a quick stop at Toys R Us.

I did no shopping today (other than the grocery store) and it felt great!

Did you find the deals better today than Friday? Or, were you like me and bought too much before hand?

Day 22 - Pulled toys to donate to kids in need

Day 23 - Dropped a donation to Goodwill (books, games, stuffed animals)

Day 24 - Donated money to the Salvation Army; Took daughter shopping to donate gifts to Heartbeats; had family in for pre-Thanksgiving dinner

Target's 4 day sale had a WII for $199. In the ad there was a $20 off coupon. I also had a $15 gift card coupon when you spend $150. Net cost would have been $164.

However, I found a WII on clearance for $139.99. Still used my coupon. Bought an extra remote for $39. Earned my gift card. Net cost (with additional remote) $143! :)

NICE! I am super excited.

Well, things are moving along here. My husband and I both got sick last week. I had to get the house in order for our son's 6th birthday party. My mother-in-law came over to help by scrubbing my bathroom and our floors - God bless her! Then, a friend bailed me out literally at the last minute on a Veggie Tales cake that I tried to make and ruined. Hers was so beautiful and tasted great!

Side note on cakes: Frugal (homemade) cakes are just not for me. From now on, I will always buy my kids birthday cakes - its just not worth the drama of me attempting to make one, then crying on the kitchen floor. I don't care the cost or the savings - they are just getting ordered from here on out. (I'm ashamed to tell you how much the cake cost that we threw away - let's just say that there was a lot of money into my garage can!)

Then, some friends blessed us with a Rainbow cleaning system. Our daughter has allergies and they really felt that she would benefit from using this system. Can you say blessed? By the way, you should have seen the gunk that came out of my freshly vacuumed carpet! Those things really have suction!

Moral of this story: Friends are good. God is better. I am blessed.

Meal Planning

We actually did have a meal plan this week - just haven't gotten around to posting. Actually I did a meal plan for the entire month of November all at once. So, trust me, we have been following the meal plan (with the exception of the flu days when all we wanted were McDonald's cheeseburgers; weird, I know!)
