We are currently saving money like crazy for a few big projects. Because of this, my shopping has been at a minimal lately. I have; however, been forced to purchase school supplies and a few clothing items for the kiddos. I have done well with this with a) staples deals/rebates and b) target clearance clothing.
My goal for August and September is to buy minimal grocery items and use what we have so that we can keep on paying cash for these home projects that we have going on. We do have a foreign exchange student coming for 2 weeks in August, so I will have a little extra in the grocery budget there, but overall we are on a clean out spree!
A few reminders for you:
Have you entered your codes for the Cars 2/Kellogg's promotion? Earn $5 gift cards for every 4 codes.
Carnival Foods FREE Lock & Lock promotion is coming to an end. If you have stamps, its time to cash them in.
Target's toy clearance is at 50% now and should be hitting 75% this week. Watch for it and shop early for Christmas.
Have a great week!

Saving Money on Medical Expenses
We've had a lot of illness lately. I think every person in out home has been on at least 2 extra prescriptions this winter. Through all of this, I've learned a few ways to save a little money on our medical.
1. COUPON - Use coupons for the pharmacy. I've been blessed with a pediatrician who keeps the Target coupons for a $10 gift card with a new Rx at his check out desk. While I can not use the gift card to pay for my prescription, I can use it for tissues, OTC meds, juice, and soup.
2. FREE FLAVORS - Take advantage of FREE flavoring for kids meds. Again at Target, they are flavoring my kids meds for FREE. I had to pay $3 per Rx for this previously. Shop around for this service. You should not have to pay for it!
3. NEGOTIATE - Did you know that you can negotiate your medical expense? I have not personally tried this, but I have a friend who has been successful at it. The trick is you have to negotiate UP FRONT and pay your portion in cash. This is very helpful for large surgery bills, delivery bills, and dental bills.
4. PREVENTATIVE CARE - I was at the dentist this week and was gain reminded of the importance of flossing. With all of the free floss that couponers can get, there is really no excuse not to take care of your pearly whites. Preventative care also includes regular check ups, exercise, good nutrition, etc. Do it. It will save you moolah and add years to your life.
5. CHECK THE CHARTS - Always check the chart of the back of your bill from a hospital. Even though we have never qualified for a reduction of rates from our local hospital, we did qualify for a 50% drop from Children's hospital a few years ago. Especially if you have children, always check the chart on the back of the bill to see if your qualify for a rate reduction. Programs are available to help families.

TARGET CLEARANCE HAS HIT!!!!!!!!!
I know, I know, you don't need anymore toys in your house right? I really don't either.
BUT, how about using those 75% off toys for:
- Easter baskets
- Your kids birthdays
- Rainy days (think craft stuff)
- Gifts for friends birthday parties
- Donations for Toys for Tots programs
- Tooth Fairy treats
- Donations for school art teachers (think crafts again)
- Grade card rewards
I'm telling you, in the long run, it is WELL worth the trip!
(I can't take a picture of my haul today because my kids know how to access my blog...but it included: a Toy Story game, a Barbie mermaid doll, a Silvermist fairy doll with accessories, a Rapunzel birthday brush and mirror set, a new bath rug for .97, a Toy Story action figure two pack with bonus flashlight - all for under $20 total!)
(Our son also used his allowance/tooth money to buy the Toy Story 3 Dr Porkchop Spaceship that retailed for 49.99 for 12.48!) :)

Target Toy Clearance
Toys are already marked down at our Target. On Wednesday, most toys were at 30%, but some were at 50%. I like to wait for the big 75% off sale. If you see something you really want at 50%, you had better grab it though! Next week out Target should start 75% markdowns. Our store historically does these on Thursdays. So keep an eye out and keep posted here for updates!

Start Watching Target for TOY Clearance
It's time to start watching Target for toy clearance! Typically things will go in this order: 30% off, 50% off, 75% off. Toys do not go to 90% off unless they are considered seasonal (like stocking stuffers.)
As the stores clearance items, you can find toys in: the toy dept (duh!), all end caps, seasonal section at front of the store, back corners of housewares - by rubbermaid stuff, even in the electronics on end caps. Just make sure to look high and low!
Don't forget to look for seasonal books to be clearanced also. This is the time to start buying for next year...
Another tips: many of the seasonal stocking stuffer toys will work for Easter baskets or Valentine's Day gifts. Think outside of the box. If it is removed from the Christmas packaging, no one will be the wiser.
Happy (bargain) hunting!

Got the WII, Got the WII. Got, Got. Got the WII!
Can you hear this chant? Come on now, you know you can! Got the WII, {SNAP} Got the WII. {SNAP} Got, Got. Got the WII!
Target's 4 day sale had a WII for $199. In the ad there was a $20 off coupon. I also had a $15 gift card coupon when you spend $150. Net cost would have been $164.
However, I found a WII on clearance for $139.99. Still used my coupon. Bought an extra remote for $39. Earned my gift card. Net cost (with additional remote) $143! :)
NICE! I am super excited.

Target Toy Clearance
MEGA - SUPER - ULTRA toy clearance at Target today - 75-90% off. Please don't judge me that I spent $70...some of it was for a power strip that we actually did need. No pics b/c its hidden for Christmas and my kids are SMART and know how to find this blog.
Some highlights: VSMILE games for 4.98, Tinkerbell balloon with Terrance for 4.98, Curious George board game for 4.98, lots of Pixo's and Chixo's for mega great prices, a remote control car for 3-something...amazing, I tell you, simply amazing. Its a good thing that I don't live close to one of those huge Targets in Columbus or we would have to get a second mortgage.

Heading to Target...

I'm heading to Target tonight for some great deals and Easter surprises...I'll let you know later what all I got. I am picturing multiple transactions here!
Don't forget to check out Target's website, where you can print coupons that will STACK with manufacturer's coupons...
And, take a reusuable bag or two, because you get credit for using them in the store (which will lower your total OOP.)

$10 with RX transfer at Target
There is a coupon on the Target Coupon Generator for a $10 gift card with a new or transferred prescription. The coupon expires 1/31. You can use multiple cpns for multiple prescriptions. I have 3 to transfer, thus earning me $30.
Also, at Target, they flavor kids meds for FREE. They carry multiple generics for $4, which is cheaper than our $5 copay.
If you are nervous about transferring your maintenance meds, why not print the coupon if you need an antibiotic (aka "sicky med") this month and earn yourself $10?

Life in Return-Land
Well, after this year's holiday returns, I have learned a few things...
1. I will faithfully shop at Kohl's. When they say, "no hassle returns," they mean it - and I like it! If only they didn't have a returns line...
2. Toys R Us can be tricky. We needed to return a Loving Family dollhouse piece that we had duplicates of. I had a gift receipt. Apparently, my MIL had scored the piece on a BOGO deal. Toys R Us claimed that it was the "free" one and gave me a really hard time exchanging it. (We did not want $$ back - just a new toy.) So glad that my 3 year old started to cry, because then FINALLY something got done. I will be careful with them next year - and I will be careful with gift receipts too; in this case it didn't help me one bit to have one.
3. Internet shopping is great, but make sure you don't have to return it. By the time I repackage, go to the post office, pay postage, and WAIT, I don't even want it anymore.
4. Target will not return or exchange without a receipt, period. The only exception is if you have the card that it was bought on and they can "look up" the item. Good thing I had my hubby on speed dial to recite his debit card number, or those too-small pj's would have haunted me forever!
5. TSC (Tractor Supply Company) = easy, breezy returns. No line, friendly, down-home people. It must be the farm thing, right? I loved the ease of this return (and the cute pjs I got on clearance today.)
How did your returning go?
