Advent Traditions: Come, Lord Jesus, Come!
As we prepare for the birth of the Savior of the world, I thought I would take a little time to share with you one of our favorite, frugal traditions.
Around the 25th of November, the kids and I haul out the leftover wrapping paper from last year's gifts. We then make 25 tags from craft supplies like card stock and stickers. Each tag is numbered from 1-25. We then lovingly wrap 25 books with paper, tag them, and place them in a basket by our tree. Every night before bed, the kids get to open a book and we read it as a family.
This is so special because it is a great time to wind down, cuddle up, and learn together. Some of our most precious discussions have come during this time. We have a great variety of books, but some of our favorites are:
-The Night Before Christmas (read on Dec 24th)
-Thomas Kincade's Away in a Manger
-Jesus, Me, and My Christmas Tree
-Merry Christmas, George (Curious George)
-The Crippled Lamb
-The Snowbelly Family of Chillyville Inn
-The Little Drummer Boy
-...and, on Christmas morning, before we open our stockings we read book #25: The Christmas Story
I hope this tradition inspires you to do something fun to make memories with your little loves this year. It's never too late to start something meaningful.
Oh, and isn't it wonderful that this Savior wants to have a real relationship with me? Not just on my good days, my nice days, my super-mom days, but my EVERY day! We are created to be in love with Him - He is the only one who can fill your heart with peace, your life with joy, your home with unconditional love.
Merry Christmas, Friends! May God bless us, everyone.

Start Watching Target for TOY Clearance
It's time to start watching Target for toy clearance! Typically things will go in this order: 30% off, 50% off, 75% off. Toys do not go to 90% off unless they are considered seasonal (like stocking stuffers.)
As the stores clearance items, you can find toys in: the toy dept (duh!), all end caps, seasonal section at front of the store, back corners of housewares - by rubbermaid stuff, even in the electronics on end caps. Just make sure to look high and low!
Don't forget to look for seasonal books to be clearanced also. This is the time to start buying for next year...
Another tips: many of the seasonal stocking stuffer toys will work for Easter baskets or Valentine's Day gifts. Think outside of the box. If it is removed from the Christmas packaging, no one will be the wiser.
Happy (bargain) hunting!

Rainy days and Tuesdays....
Its a rainy day here in Central OH. Therefore, at my house its a pj day, a school day, a catch up on my blog-reading day, a laundry day, an easy dinner day, a let's watch a movie in the afternoon kind of day. It may even turn into a family game night kind of day.
What do you like to do on rainy days?
I think that God knew we needed a day like this and ordered the rain just for us. I love my rainy, cozy days.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday
I have to admit that I have not been very motivated this year to get out and spend my hard-saved cash. Most of my shopping is complete as of today. I still have a few more small gifts to buy - under $10 each. I need to take the kids Daddy shopping. That's it.
I headed out to Meijer on Back Friday to purchase a DVD player for my husband's aunt. I went to WalMart and bought nada. Same with the mall. I went to CVS and bought ALL of the freebies. I also made a quick stop at Toys R Us.
I did no shopping today (other than the grocery store) and it felt great!
Did you find the deals better today than Friday? Or, were you like me and bought too much before hand?

Got the WII, Got the WII. Got, Got. Got the WII!
Can you hear this chant? Come on now, you know you can! Got the WII, {SNAP} Got the WII. {SNAP} Got, Got. Got the WII!
Target's 4 day sale had a WII for $199. In the ad there was a $20 off coupon. I also had a $15 gift card coupon when you spend $150. Net cost would have been $164.
However, I found a WII on clearance for $139.99. Still used my coupon. Bought an extra remote for $39. Earned my gift card. Net cost (with additional remote) $143! :)
NICE! I am super excited.

I get by with a little help from my friends...
Well, things are moving along here. My husband and I both got sick last week. I had to get the house in order for our son's 6th birthday party. My mother-in-law came over to help by scrubbing my bathroom and our floors - God bless her! Then, a friend bailed me out literally at the last minute on a Veggie Tales cake that I tried to make and ruined. Hers was so beautiful and tasted great!
Side note on cakes: Frugal (homemade) cakes are just not for me. From now on, I will always buy my kids birthday cakes - its just not worth the drama of me attempting to make one, then crying on the kitchen floor. I don't care the cost or the savings - they are just getting ordered from here on out. (I'm ashamed to tell you how much the cake cost that we threw away - let's just say that there was a lot of money into my garage can!)
Then, some friends blessed us with a Rainbow cleaning system. Our daughter has allergies and they really felt that she would benefit from using this system. Can you say blessed? By the way, you should have seen the gunk that came out of my freshly vacuumed carpet! Those things really have suction!
Moral of this story: Friends are good. God is better. I am blessed.
"Every good and perfect gift is from above."

Meal Planning
We actually did have a meal plan this week - just haven't gotten around to posting. Actually I did a meal plan for the entire month of November all at once. So, trust me, we have been following the meal plan (with the exception of the flu days when all we wanted were McDonald's cheeseburgers; weird, I know!)
Did you meal plan this week/month? Its one of the easiest things to do to your change your budget!

It is Better to Give than to Receive
Today is day 1 of the 30-Day Giving Challenge. I absolutely loved participating in this last year. Some of my ideas for these 30 days in November are:
- Cleaning out the pantry for the food pantry
- Giving hubby a backrub (which takes both time and energy; a gift on my part)
- Making gifts for the hospital/nursery/pediatrics with the kids...
- Donate baby things to Heartbeats, a pregnancy center
- Offer a free couponing class
- Trip to Goodwill of donations
- Leave coupons on the shelf at the store
- Bring back neighbors trash cans
- Take flowers to elderly neighbor
- Operation Christmas Child boxes
- Buy angel tree gift
- Coupon booklets for the kids (movie night, hug, extra desert, etc)
- Gift of prayer; meeting a friend for coffee and prayer
- Giving a meal to a new mom; or a pregnant tired one
- Sharing a meal with someone new
In a book I was just reading, the authors were discussing how much more fulfilling life is when you die to self and spend your moments in service to others. Things become less complicated, you have a purpose, you become more content and satisfied.
This month, I will join other bloggers in dying to self and choosing to SEEK OUT ways to give. Some I will be able to share. Some will be so personal, I will not. But know this: when I stop thinking of myself and start thinking of others, I will be satisfied.
God is more than enough for me, my thirst, my needs, and He can use me to help others too! How awesome is that? Are you with me?

Organized Christmas
Something that has really helped me to enjoy the Christmas season in our home is my holiday planner. I found this planner template through the site Organized Christmas and it has truly cut down on my stress level and helped me organize my holiday life from Halloween through New Years Day. The best part of this system is that it is free and down-loadable on the web. You can customize it by being crafty if you wish. I am bring this up, because, believe it or not, it is time to start prepping for the holidays. On Organized Christmas, there are names for every week with checklists of things to do NOW to make the actual week of Christmas more manageable. This week is "Get Organized" week. The weeks following are: "Reality Check," "Gifts and Giving," "Get Cooking," "Decorate," and "Celebrate." Check it out and see how it can help you out this season!

ALDI - Halloween Costumes
Did you know that Aldi sells Halloween costumes? I did not. While shopping today, I saw Alice in Wonderland, Jessie and Woody from Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear, Spiderman, and a Star Wars guy. They were priced around $12. Just an FYI, if you are still looking for a costume (or another place to find clearanced costumes for next year/your dress up box.)

This week at Carnival - Local
I actually made a trip to Carnival foods this week! This is rare for me. I am truthfully not a fan of their door-buster coupon deals with fine print that reads "when you buy $15 in more of our expensive stuff." :) This week; however, I made an exception...

Capri Sun 1.98
Italian Bread .98
Niagra bottled water 1.98
Hunt's Ketchup 2/$1 (wyb $10 in product)

National Coupon Month
Did you know that September is National Coupon Month? I think that makes for a good time to reorganize your boxes, files, or binders, don't you? Share your strategies for organizing coupons in the comments section.
I personally use the binder system with baseball card holders to hold my coupons. Restaurant coupons are in the back pocket. When I get ready for a trip, I pull what I think I will need and put it in an envelope with my purse. Of course I always take my binder along too, just in case!

Rewards Programs
I wanted to take a few minutes to highlight some FREE rewards programs that you may not be already using:
1. Pampers Gifts-to Grow: you will earn points from products you buy (including wipes) and also get "free" points from facebook, bloggers, etc. Redeem these points for toys, dvds, magazine subscriptions, and photo gifts.
2. Points from your bank: I use points through PNC Bank. Earn points every time you use your debit/credit card and redeem them for housewares, entertainment, even gift cards.
3. Toys R Us Rewards: scan your card at the register and earn points. You will automatically receive a gift card when you have reached the designated amt of points.
4. Staples Rewards: scan at register (even when buying the doorbuster sales) and earn gift certificates to use in the store later.
My thought is, if these programs are free, why not use them? You are earning free money/product, overall reducing your budget, or even allowing for a "splurge" here and there. Is it a pain to carry all of those cards, yes! But I will gladly carry a select few to use the perks that go with them. What about you? As they say, "What's in your wallet?"

Realizing the Blessings of Virtual Education
Many of my bloggy friends have been complaining (i mean blogging) about the cost of back-to-school shopping. I will admit buying USB drives, white board cleaner, toilet paper, and all of the regular stuff does seem excessive. I would probably be complaining too if we had lists like that issued by the local district or even the private school we considered (plus uniforms, ugh!). However, we made a different choice this year for our kindergartner: public school done virtually at home.
The purpose of this post is not to debate our choices, but rather to point out how RELIEVED I am over NO supply list. I honestly had to make up one of my own to buy. It went like this: "Oh, you like those crayons, let's get some. And throw the erasers in the cart too!"
The only thing that I stocked up on was printer paper while Staples had the .01 promos. (Oh, and the 25 boxes of Crayolas from Kroger that I kept after donating almost 100 to our school supply drive...remember how they were earning me money?) Ok. Seriously. That's all. I'm feeling blessed, relieved, and thankful. Good luck with school this year!

Get Motivated Monday
I haven't posted one of these in awhile, but I am starting something new so that we have things under control here for when school starts (in 3 weeks). I started subscribing to FlyLady. My goals for each day are slightly modified though:
- I usually accept her 15 minute challenge (today it was wiping down entry way doors, sweeping porches, and shaking mats)
- I do get dressed everyday, although not always down to my shoes.
- I have a clean sink every night.
- I run a load of laundry every day (except the weekends).
- I "swish and swipe" app. 3 times per week (instead of daily.)
In addition to her daily reminder, I have also put up some chore charts for the kids to earn allowance and a weekly list for me. Here's what mine looks like:
Meals and Money Monday(Includes Grocery Lists, Budget Updating, Coupon Clipping, Etc)
Tubs and Toilets Tuesday (Clean all 3 Bathrooms Except Floors)
Whatever Wednesday (Deep Clean Kitchen, Grocery Shop, Sweep Basement, etc)
Trinket Trap Thursday (Dust)
Find the Floors Friday (Mop and Vacuum)
Savor Saturdays (Family Day)
Spirit Sundays (Spiritual Renewal)
So, right now, here is what it all looks like for me. I am trying to get this chaos under control. I REALLY need school to run smoothly this year and only have about 1 1/2 hours a day to spend on focused cleaning. So, I need to have a plan. Then, if i miss something or run out of time, its no big deal...I'll catch up soon enough. Anyway, hope this helps someone out there! Happy cleaning!

Free Family Day Tomorrow
We are taking out kids tomorrow to the city beach in Port Clinton, OH on Lake Erie. The city beach is free and there is a nice park with restrooms right across the street from it. We are packing a picnic lunch and plenty of drinks/snacks. We are taking a bucket of sand toys and the camera. When we get tired, we will drive the 2 1/2 hours home. All we will spend is a tank of gas...What can you do for free with only a tank of gas?

Target Toy Clearance
MEGA - SUPER - ULTRA toy clearance at Target today - 75-90% off. Please don't judge me that I spent $70...some of it was for a power strip that we actually did need. No pics b/c its hidden for Christmas and my kids are SMART and know how to find this blog.
Some highlights: VSMILE games for 4.98, Tinkerbell balloon with Terrance for 4.98, Curious George board game for 4.98, lots of Pixo's and Chixo's for mega great prices, a remote control car for 3-something...amazing, I tell you, simply amazing. Its a good thing that I don't live close to one of those huge Targets in Columbus or we would have to get a second mortgage.

Rant
So, I am in Toys R Us today buying my kids "treats" for having such a successful garage sale (over $400) and getting rid of so many of their toys... Well, they decided that they wanted the rest of the Super Why Action Figures because Reagan got Princess Presto a few weeks back (with birthday money) on clearance and the rest of the set may not be there much longer. I said that I would buy them each one and they decided to pool their piggy bank monies to buy the last one. (For those of you who do not watch Super Why, we were looking for Wonder Red, Alpha Pig, and Super Why.) Sign was clearanced to 4.98. Cashier rang up 1 at 4.98 and other 2 at 5.98. When I questioned the price, you would have thought that I committed a crime. Her rationale was that the girls were 4.98 and the boys were 5.98. I suggested that we do a price check because they were all on the shelf together (and I wanted my $2, darn it!) After an eye roll, she used her walkie-talkie (renamed walkie-crabby-talkie) to ask for a price check. Guy comes back saying 4.98. She STILL insists that the boys are higher, asking him to check the shelf for another tag. God bless the guy, he still agrees with me, describes the items in great detail, and she huffs, then states, that she "will see if" she can change the price. You are darn-tootin' you can change the price! I was wondering: since when did it become an issue to question a price? Seriously, people. You are getting paid to make me happy, and, quite frankly, I was not trying to rip you off. I was right. So there.

MIA - Nope, Not I!
Yes, I have been MIA from the blog this week - didn't even post my meal plan in fact. But, I have a good excuse. Really I do.
We are having the BIGGEST, BADDEST, BESTEST garage sale this weekend and I need a favor, ok? Pray for NO RAIN!
OK, thanks for praying...seriously, my garage is so full right now, I can't get in there. Getting up at 5 am tomorrow to start the process of unloading into the driveway. Wish us blessings of customers with money who need my stuff!
